As DLT is cleared, are we seeing justice or a witch-hunt ? Daily Telegraph (0 comments)

The best solution frankly is to have a Statute of Limitations as they have in many other countries including the USA. The time bar can vary depending on the offence and some offences, such as murder, are rarely subject to a limitation. But it seems to me that without corroborating evidence it is impossible to convict someone of these kinds of offences 'beyond reasonable doubt' after such a long passage of time. The memory, and the mind, play tricks and we are all guilty of embellishing memories and distorting them, often unconsciously, as time goes past. And you cannot ignore the fact that some behaviour was acceptable to society in general in the past but is not now: it is not just to impose todays moral code on trying someone for an alleged offence which took place at a time when certain behaviour was regarded differently
